Multistrips, Striplines and EMC
Varying signal and return geometries can greatly change a device's electromagnetic emissions (EMI) profile in addition to changing the impedance of the transmission line formed. An imperfect transmission line does not trap all its flux between the conductors. Some of the "lost flux" envelopes the return conductor producing a voltage along it which can cause common mode emissions. From “Know the Theory of Partial Inductance to Control Emissions.”
