Testing for Electromagnetic Emissions (EMI)

Ira Barry demonstrates the methods used to test for electromagnetic interference (EMI) at the laboratory he partially owned, Dash, Straus and Goodhue, in this 1984 photo. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) required any cables attached to a device under test be moved in relation to the device while monitoring every frequency between 30 and 1000MHz. The tests were exhaustive, and even for a simple device, often took hours to complete.
